Details

Pachisi is a race game that originated in medieval India. The name of the game is derived from the Hindi word paccīs, meaning "twenty-five", the largest score that can be thrown with the cowrie shells that are used in a similar fashion to dice. Although the exact origins of the game are contested, we do know the game dates back to at least the 16th century when the emperor Akbar played Pachisi with human pieces on boards of inlaid marble, the remains of which may still be seen. Many Western variations like Ludo have been simplified for children.
